Okay, Novell has done some shitty things in the past (mostly their work with Microsoft); but also some great things. XGL+Compiz is fantastic and SuSE (disregard YaST for a moment) is pretty good too. I have to give them props for the " meet Linux" clips. |

We all know people are stupid, but why must they propagate the idiocy by writing news posts as fact without any basis for the information? Case in point: <Quote> 1. FastCGI causes load spikes on linux servers 2. Rails using FastCGI, and Apache v1.3 or 2.0 is buggy 3. Rails developers don’t always know how to use the linux command line The preferred method for serving up Ruby on Rails is a Load balance Mongrel Cluster, and it proved to be a hassle for hosting companies to offer because the proxy portion of rails requires the server admin to add/remove lines to the httpd.conf every time a customer wants to add or remove a rails application which can be a support nightmare both for client and host if you have lots of Rails users. </Quote> An interesting take, though I don't agree with most of this article. FastCGI does not cause load spikes when properly configured. And how exactly is using apache 1.3 and 2 both buggy. What webserver would they have it run, while still on a cPanel machine? Apache 1.3 is proven stable and reliable. I manage the rails/fcgi/apache 1.3x on LOTS of cPanel servers and I cannot point to one instance where it has caused problems (be it system-wide load spikes, stability or otherwise). I have nothing against Mongrel and Pound but what sort of rails apps are the users developing which need load balancing between several machines? Hosts which run cPanel rarely load balance (just search on the cpanel forums). They mostly do shared and reseller hosting on individual boxes because that is how cPanel was meant to run. I do believe that a rails plugin for cPanel would be genius, just for the end-user's happiness and ease of use...and honestly that's justification enough. No need to fabricate other reasons.
Oh well, I just needed to blow off a little steam with that. |

Holy crap! Is it really December? Where did the time go? Been living in our new house for a month now and it's fantastic. Already have the xmas tree and lots of work done as far as 'move-in-fix-ups' are concerned. Ran some new coax and cat 5, so network is up and cable is working great. The false ceiling in the basement was excellent for that. 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, finished basement, 2 car garage; almost TOO big. Took a few pics of the place right after we moved in and posted them in the gallery. I love the backyard! We also decided to get a dog (momentary insanity). Now it's a real mini-zoo: 3 cats, rabbit, fish and a dog. He's been named Baxter and is Golden Retriever/Poodle (Golden Doodle). Baxter was born on 9/12/2006 and now is working on growing into a giant which will eat everything in site (starting with our coffee table). No pictures of Baxter yet as my camera decided to 'asplode' Put the battery in the charger one night and left it on the kitchen table. Plugged the battery back in the next morning and the lcd has that horrible "I'm broken" look. It's over a year old so no real warranty to speak of. Not sure what we're going to do about that yet. It still technically works, but obviously it's not quite so nice to have a digital camera if you cannot see what settings you're adjusting or view the pictures instantly. Ah well, life I suppose. -Map |

Apparently Turkish hackers just love ravaging joomla sites. Oh hooray. Well update 1.0.11 is applied and I figured I would tinker with the theme as well. "empire" looks kind of nice and flashy. Not much really else to say. Work has been hell but I did find this snazzy script for kubuntu that installs ... well... everything cool. It's: here Oh wait! Nothing new to say, hahah! I almost forgot to mention that we are looking into buying a house. We got pre-approved for the loan today and are going to the open house this upcoming Sunday so I'm pretty excited. I must be tired to have completely bypassed something so huge. Ah well, back to work.... |

Hooray for updates and new templates. I kinda like this new one. It's messy yet organized well. I feel that it reflects how I am in real life so it's fitting for my blog as well. Plus the coffee rings are very indicitive of how my desk looks before cleaning. Not to mention Joomla has been update to 1.0.10 sundown release to patch several security vulnerabilities (booooo). Welp, back to work. -MAP
